GaLTT NEWS - AUGUST 2006
Hello GaLTT members !!
Have you been wondering what we’ve been up to? Over the last few
months deaths, births, illness, injury and summer vacations have slowed
progress within the Board on GaLTT’s business. The Board has continued
to meet over the summer on a flexible schedule. The next meeting is Tuesday
August 15th 7:30 at the Rollo-McLay portable. Watch for the new fall/winter
meeting schedule to be posted soon.
Charitable Organization
We have a cause for celebration. Our application for charitable organization
status was finally approved this month! We can now issue tax receipts
for donations without involving the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust,
who have generously provided that service since our start up.
Trails Progress
A new south-end trails project is underway on a neighbourhood
beach access near Drumbeg Park. Work parties are meeting every second
Tuesday, 1 to 3 pm – contact Randy Young at 247-8541 for more details.
The next date is August 15th.with John Gambrill leading (247-9990)
who is looking for six to eight volunteers to meet at 1:00 pm on Stalker
Rd just before the entrance to Drumbeg Park. Bring gloves and hand
pruners or loppers.
The Petroglyph Trail Community Park is roughed-out as a foot path and
still needs refining before the winter rains. Lots of use and maintenance
with clippers is required to keep the underbrush from taking over in this
lush area. If you wish to help call Bob Smith at 247-9823.
GaLTT has also been engaged with the RDN on erecting some temporary trail
marking and signage in the 707 acres community park on the two easy loops
described in our 2006 trails map brochure. Red and yellow triangle markers
now help direct trail users and maps will be posted soon at the entrances
at Fisher Rd, Jeanette and Coats.
Important Succession Planning
Two of our hardest working and important
Board members are about to retire and we are looking for replacements.
Marylyn Beaubien has been our secretary since our inaugural AGM and
will be retiring in October to do more traveling with Bill. Richard Welsh
has been our treasurer since the beginning and will retire at the end
of this year to travel as well. We need find replacements. The new treasurer
should have some accounting experience and ideally be willing to work
alongside Richard for the last few months.
If you have an interest in parks and trails, enjoy working on an enthusiastic
team, and have some time and skills to share, please consider joining
us. Contact Kerry Marcus at 247-8066 for more information.
Fundraising
Our “Postcards form Gabriola” quilt raffle is well underway,
with the draw to take place on September 10th. Tickets are still available!
Many thanks to members who have worked hard at the Farmers Market every
Saturday selling tickets, T-shirts, and providing information about GaLTT.
Enjoy our August parks and trails and please be very careful due to the
extreme fire hazard.
Sincerely,
Kerry Marcus
President
